What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda (eye-er-vay-duh) (आयुर्वेद) is defined as the “Science of Life,” and is one of the oldest systems of medicine. The sister science to yoga (योग), Ayurveda works on an individual level, by helping you first identify your personal constitution, so that you can better understand and meet your own needs. From here, we work with the Four Pillars Of Health, including diet (ahar), lifestyle (vihar), sleep (nidra), and the balance of energy (brahmacharya). Through the lens of this ancient science, we create a plan to help bring yourself home to a true version of who you’ve always been. Learn more here.

What can Ayurveda treat?

Ayurveda can treat a range of symptoms, including but not limited to: Digestive issues, sleep problems, menstrual irregularities/pain, infertility, low libido, skin conditions, mood swings, fatigue, bloating, IBS, constipation, and more. When we work within the parameters of Ayurveda, in conjunction with special attention to your particular prakruti (constitution), we can create lasting change that will make you feel better, inside and out.

Will I have to give up my favorite foods?

You’ll notice that, as you begin paying attention to and understanding how foods affect the body, mind, and energy, that you’ll crave less, and instead, seek out the nutrition your body needs rather than wants. That said, Ayurveda is not a strict diet, and restriction is not a part of what we do. Instead, we focus on finding a balance that feels nourishing and sustainable. You will establish a new, positive, and reflective relationship with how and what you eat, that will allow you to carry the teachings with you every time you sit down to eat a meal.

How does Ayurveda work alongside of yoga?

Ayurveda and yoga were created with the intention of practicing both on a regular, ongoing basis. This looks different than what we are used to in western culture; treating yoga as a workout for the physical body, and food as something that either has to satisfy a desire or sustain us because we are short on time. When approached with an open mind and open heart, you’ll find that as you begin eating for your dominant doṣa (the primary blend of elements that make up the main portion of your constitution), you’ll also begin paying closer attention to your body and what it needs. This is where we pull in the spiritual practice of yoga, and blend the two in a way that best suits your needs and intentions.

What does an Initial Ayurvedic Consultation look like for brand new clients?

An initial consultation is your first step toward developing a deeper relationship with yourself. You’ll contact Jen to book an appointment, and once scheduled, be sent an in-depth Wellness Questionnaire to assess your current state of health, concerns, goals, and a general look at your constitution. Jen will spend time reviewing your questionnaire, which you’ll discuss either in person or via Zoom at your appointment. This is a cooperative environment, and clients are encouraged to bring any questions, and participate fully in the discussion as we clarify the next best steps. Following your appointment, Jen will send a detailed message outlining the steps discussed, potentially adding more recommendations for how to proceed with diet, lifestyle, sleep, and energy management. Movement and spiritual work, in the form of yoga, will be recommended based on the needs of the client.

Follow-up consultations and/or personalized yoga practices will be recommended on a case-by-case basis. In general, it’s a good idea to schedule a follow-up each turn of the seasons to check in on goals and adjust based on how you’re feeling, what’s working, and what needs attention.

“The effort never goes to waste, and there is no failure. even a little effort toward spiritual awareness will protect you from the greatest fear.”
